I’m a freelance journalist living in Toronto, where I moved this January from Edinburgh, Scotland.
So far life in Toronto is much like life in Edinburgh, except it snows here in winter and gets warm enough in summer to require air conditioning, whereas Edinburgh is windy and drizzly pretty much all year round. I occasionally complain that the bread here is weirdly sweet, and that the gum flavours are different. On the other hand, the transport runs all night, the newsracks sell twenty different magazines I want to read instead of two, and there is more than one kind of granola. It’s all about the little things.
I don’t have a Scottish accent because I lost it years before I left, for reasons which are unclear even to me.
I write regularly for Xtra, and I’m the Web Editor for Shameless.
You can see my recent clippings on the Articles page.
